Coach  Forrest Mazey, the head football coach, resigned from his position for the Poteau Pirates in Mid-January. According to McAlester school’s statement, Mazey will be the Buffaloes new head coach for their 2019-2020 season. The Poteau Pirates recently hired Greg Werner to coach the upcoming football season.

Coach Werner had previously been at Poteau prior to coach Mazey’s term as football coach. Coach Werner taught football for three seasons(2012-2014) and led Poteau to a 24-11 record and a chance to win the  2013 state title game. Werner left Poteau to take over coaching at 7A Van Buren, but struggled with the Pointers as he won just two games in three seasons before leaving to take over at Hilldale in 2018. He then led the Hornets who played in the same conference as Poteau, to a 9-3 season and a trip to the 4A quarterfinals, according to 5 News.

“I really enjoyed my time at Poteau and when the opportunity came, I jumped at the chance to come back,” said Werner. Werner jumped at the chance because he knew the team would be successful in his future. “I believe we have a lot of pieces in place, I wouldn’t have came if I didn’t believe in succeeding,” said Coach Werner.

The Pirates have faith that they we will succeed with their new coach.
