Hostiles was released on January 19, 2017. It was directed by Scott Cooper and stars Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi.

Scott Cooper was the director of Crazy Heart, and Black Mass. With a few tricks under his sleeve, Scott Cooper tries to pull out another white-knuckled drama, but does it work?

Christian Bale whips out a southern accent to play the gruff Capt. Joseph J. Blocker as he escorts Chief Yellow Hawk through dangerous territory and horrible weather. On his journey, he meets Rosalie Quaid, played by a destroyed and torn apart Rosamund Pike.  Wes Studi’s performance as Chief Yellow Hawk is strong and pulls some emotional punches.

While the film is a deep, slow burn, it’s very long. The experience reminded me of my theater viewing of The Revenant. Interesting enough to be invested, but too long for a second time. I give Hostiles an 8/10. Go check it out. You won’t leave without a new perspective on “the old west.”
